  • VEDUKKUNARI MALAI-FOREST: FIELD VISIT REPORT

    Date of Visit: 10th may 2025

    Time: 11 A.M to 4 P.M.

    Location: Paalamotai Nainamadu Forest Reserve in Olumadu, near Nedunkeni in Vavuniya District, Sri Lanka.

    Organized by: Faculty of Siddha Medicine, Department of Gunapadam

    The field visit was organized as part of our curriculum under Mooligaiyeyal – II to enhance practical knowledge about medicinal plants and their uses in traditional and modern medicine. It was conducted during the academic field hours of 2nd BSMS students guided by academic staff and temporary demonstrators of department of Gunapadam.

    The objective was to identify and document medicinal plants growing in a specific region, along with their therapeutic uses, life cycle, toxic properties, and useful parts. Also understand the ecological and medicinal significance of various plant species used in siddha healthcare systems.

    The field visit commenced at 11:00 AM and concluded at 4:00 PM. During the forest walk, we observed and documented nearly 120 species of medicinal herbal plants. We identified their botanical names and plant families, noted the parts of the plants used in medicine, and studied the ecological and medicinal significance of various species used in the Siddha healthcare system. We also noted botanical features (such as leaf shape, flowers, and bark), and their habitats.

    Among the identified species, nearly 15 are rare medicinal plants are rare, such as Vedpalai, Panichchai, Pirai, Karunkali, Mulli, Kaddu Kaarai, Veerai, Kalthaamarai, Peikommaddi,kakkaikolli, murali, savurikkodi, etc Some plant specimens were also collected for nursery preparation, while others were gathered for herbarium specimen preparation and medicinal use.

    The field visit was an enriching experience that bridged theoretical knowledge with field-based learning. It underscored the importance of preserving biodiversity and encouraged us to further explore the field of ethnobotany.

  • Sahasak Nimavum- 2025

    Event Overview:

    The Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna, proudly participated in the “Sahasak Nimavum” 2025 – International Inventions & Innovations Competition & National Exhibition, organized by Sri Lanka Inventors Commission under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The event was held on 25th – 27th April 2025 at BMICH, Colombo. The Faculty participated under the University Business Linkage (UBL) Cell and the involvement was coordinated by Dr. (Mrs.) R. Sugeevan, UBL, Faculty Coordinator.

    The participation of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine in Sahasak Nimavum” 2025 – International Inventions & Innovations Competition & National Exhibition, was a resounding success. It provided an excellent platform for the students to showcase their innovative talents and traditional knowledge. This experience has motivated the faculty to continue promoting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Siddha medicine at both national and international levels.

    This initiative was also supported and mentored by Dr. (Mrs.) V. Sathiyaseelan and Dr. (Mrs.) K. Sounthararajan whose guidance played a key role in preparation of the invention products of the students.

    Stall Details:

    Our faculty’s exhibition stall displayed a wide range of herbal products, which attracted a significant number of visitors, including researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians, school students and the general public. The professionalism and creativity demonstrated at the stall highlighted the potential of traditional knowledge integrated with modern innovation.

    • Networking Opportunities: Students and staff had the opportunity to interact with national and international inventors, strengthening prospects for future collaborations and research initiatives.
    • Skill Enhancement: Participants improved their skills in product development, presentation, entrepreneurship, and effective communication.
  • Field Visits

    Second BSMS STUDENTS visited to the following places for identifying medicinal plants under the supervision of lectures, Medical officers, traditional doctors and Demonstrators. Around 150 medicinal, rare, redlisted and endermic plants were identified in this visit.
